The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised to always abide by relevant laws and constitution provisions on the registration of political parties in the country.
Mr. Aminu Idris, INEC Head, Election, and Party Monitoring Department, said this on Tuesday in Abuja at a policy roundtable on modalities for measuring political parties’ performance in Nigeria.
The Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) with support from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office sorely organized this round table meeting, Independent reports.
Idris, represented by Mr. Shehu Wahab, an INEC official, said that party registration had requirements and INEC would continue to act based on those requirements.
When asked if INEC would still consider applications from some groups seeking registration as political parties, Idris said that as a law-abiding institution, INEC would continue to look into such applications and would always act on them accordingly.
